The student farm hand position will play a crucial role in supporting various operations on our farm, contributing to the growth and sustainability of our urban agriculture initiative. This volunteer position offers an excellent opportunity to engage with sustainable farming practices, gain hands-on experience in urban agriculture, and contribute to your local community.
Responsibilities:
Crop Maintenance:
Assist in planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting crops according to farm schedules and guidelines.
Monitor plant health and report any issues to farm supervisors.
Support soil maintenance activities, including composting and soil amendment.
Greenhouse Management:
Aid in greenhouse operations, including seeding, transplanting, and maintaining optimal growing conditions.
Monitor greenhouse temperature, humidity, and ventilation systems.
Assist in pest and disease management through organic methods.
Infrastructure Maintenance:
Assist in the maintenance and repair of farm infrastructure, such as fencing, irrigation systems, and tools.
Help maintain cleanliness and organization in farm areas, including tool sheds and storage spaces.
Harvesting and Packing:
Participate in harvesting produce according to harvest schedules.
Wash, sort, and pack harvested crops for distribution.
Assist in maintaining accurate harvest records.
Community Engagement:
Engage with visitors and community members during farm tours, workshops, and events.
Educate visitors about urban farming practices, sustainability, and the importance of local food systems.
Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere on the farm.
Other Duties:
Assist with special projects and events as needed.
Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others.
Qualifications:
· Student position must be attending post-secondary in the fall.
· Passion for sustainable agriculture and urban farming.
· Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks, including lifting and bending.
· Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
· Willingness to learn and take direction from farm supervisors.
· Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
· Food Handler’s Certificate preferred.
· Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy items exceeding 50 lbs.
· Previous farming or gardening experience is preferred but not required.
