Term: 16 weeks
Hours: 20 hours per week (8 hours during the week, 8 hours on Saturdays)

Market Attendant/Farm Hand for McQuesten Urban Farm

Responsibilities

Market Attendant Responsibilities

  • Interact with the public in a friendly, positive manner, offering information and directions as necessary.
  • Oversee the setup and cleanup of the market space, leaving it in pristine condition.
  • Provide information in a professional manner and inform customers about ongoing activities at the McQuesten Urban Farm and Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg.
  • Maintain accurate data from sales, including customer feedback, to enhance the market’s success.
  • Inform the supervisor of any necessary upkeep, repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and supplies to ensure safety and security standards are met.
  • Follow all policies and procedures of Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg and all other related legislation.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by the Executive Director or delegate.

Farm Hand Responsibilities

  • Assist with planting, weeding, harvesting, and general maintenance of the farm.
  • Operate basic farm equipment such as wheelbarrows, shovels, and watering tools.
  • Ensure proper handling, cleaning, and storage of produce.
  • Help organize and maintain farm-related tools and supplies.
  • Support farm-related educational activities and workshops as needed.
  • Monitor crop health and report issues such as pests or plant diseases to the Farm Team Lead.

Specific Job Competencies

  • Sales experience and high-level mathematical skills.
  • Social media skills (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) would be an asset.
  • Experience working with a Square terminal considered an asset but training will be provided.
  • Knowledge of safe food handling, organic vegetables, and the benefits of organic farming is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage key relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving, diplomacy, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience in a community setting working with Indigenous children, youth, and families would be an asset.
  • High level of self-awareness and participation in regular self-care.
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to identify key issues and overcome challenges creatively and strategically.
  • Strong analytical, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily outdoor work in varied weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to lift and carry 30-50 lbs.
  • Early morning work hours.
  • Long periods of standing.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Must have a clear Vulnerable Sector Screen.
  • Must have valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Must have all required medical vaccinations.
  • Knowledge of the importance of First Nations Language and Cultural Traditions is an asset.
