Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Lead Farmer to oversee operations at McQuesten Urban Farm. This is more than a farming role—it’s an opportunity to lead, inspire, and make a tangible difference in the community. As the Lead Farmer, you will apply your expertise in sustainable and organic farming to nurture the land and people it serves.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and lead daily farming operations, including planting, cultivation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
- Implement organic and sustainable practices to maintain soil health and biodiversity.
- Develop a diverse crop plan, including Indigenous plant varieties.
- Manage irrigation, pest control, and crop rotation to optimize yields sustainably.
- Collaborate with local organizations to distribute produce and engage with the community.
- Serve as a resource for ecological education and advocacy at the farm.
- Maintain and operate farm machinery and tools.
Experience & Skills:
- 3+ years in a Lead Farmer or comparable role with extensive organic farming experience.
- Expertise in sustainable and regenerative agriculture.
- Proven leadership, organization, and project management abilities.
- Collaborative mindset with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Personal Qualities:
- Passion for community engagement and environmental stewardship.
- Resourceful, motivated, and energetic with a positive outlook.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Comfortable with physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
Working Conditions
- Balance between indoor administrative work and outdoor farming activities,
- Interact with community members, volunteers, and organizations.
- Some evening and weekend work may be required.
- Physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and operating machinery.
