Location: Hamilton, ON
Term: 8 weeks – Starting week of June 30, 2025
Hours: 35 hours per week, shift work
Rate of Pay: $17.20/hour

Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg provides holistic programs and service for Indigenous children, youth, families, and community that are rooted in culture and language. Our vision is Strong Cultural Identity and Healthy Families. Under the direction of the Early years Manager and Leadership Team, ECE Assistant Students are responsible for engaging children in early learning activities in a licensed childcare setting and supporting the classroom needs. Students will work with an RECE mentor who will provide supervision and regular meetings to review the student work plan, discuss duties and programming for children.
Job Descriptions
- Participate in professional development as manager sees fit ie. zoom cultural teachings and language classes.
- Develop Early Years Activities and resources-pre-record videos
- Support and assist Early Years educators by putting activities kits and program materials together, and help organize them for delivery
- Attend and facilitate virtual programing and creating video workshop and activities for families and children.
- Engaging children and families in early learning and cultural activities.
- Sharing the responsibility for planning, preparing and implementing stimulating, age-appropriate activities that encourage children’s creativity and learning and promote each child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development.
- Establishing and maintaining regular communication with parents
- Knowing and implementing program routines and practices set out by:
- Ontario Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) regulations.
- City of Hamilton Public Health Department guidelines.
- Following all policies and procedures of Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg and any relevant and related legislation.
- Other duties as required or assigned by the Early Years Manager, or delegate.
- Promotes a favorable image of Niwasa Early Learning and Care Centre in the community, private and public sector.
- Participate in team meetings, educational conferences, cultural teachings and language classes and training workshops.
Working Conditions
- Will work primarily in an classroom/indoor setting but must be able to participate in outdoor settings often (field trips, outdoor play, etc.)
- Interacts with children, family members, staff, visitors, and local organizations.
- May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,
- Interacts with children, family members, staff, visitors and government agencies.
- Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
- Some evening and weekend hours for fundraising events, open house, professional development and meetings.
- Travel may be required.
Qualifications
- Must be a returning student in either the secondary or post-secondary educational system.
- Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screen.
- Must have a valid Infant First Aid/CPR Level C certification.
- Must have all required medical vaccinations
- Knowledge of OEYC Best Practices
- Food Handler’s Certificate
- Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy items over 50 lbs.
